Polishers often use a mixture of materials when it comes to staining, they use white sheeting and white towelling rags.

Making a French polishing rubber from a piece of rag

1. Simply wrap a piece of our white lint-free cotton cloth around some of the other white sheeting rag wipers forming a wad.
2. By using a few of the cut pieces crumpled up tightly, placed in the centre of another piece laid flat, bring in the four corners of the outer rag over the crumpled ones and twist to form a pear-shaped pad.
3. Ensure that you have the outer rag tight (so it doesn’t crease or fold up whilst rubbing over the furniture).
4. You can now use this to apply your layers of shellac coating.
